It can be made a day or two ahead of time especially if you know you will be busy leading up to when you need it. Once baked, it is freezable too! You will love the warm bread and sausage smells sneaking out from the oven, this breakfast will be filling and comforting. Our favorite time for this recipe is during the holidays.

The Ingredients

Serves: 6 to 8

  • 6 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 ½ cups milk (unsweetened, non-dairy will work)
  • 2 ½ tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 ½ tsp Acme STK Blend (OR 1 tsp Acme Superior Salt Mix)
  • 1 TBSP Worcestershire Sauce
  • 5 cups cubed bread
  • 1 pound bacon cooked, crumbled and cool
  • 1 pound sausage, cooked, crumbled and cool
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Tips

KEEP IN MIND

  • You can change this recipe in so many ways! Change the meats, add more meat, omit the meat! Add veggies, change the dairy items to unsweetened dairy free milk and dairy free cheese of your choice, or even no cheese. Amounts to follow.
  • If you want to make this ahead because you will be having a busy morning, but you want it fresh out of the oven to serve, then we suggest:
    • Pre cook your meats and refrigerate up to 3 days before serving
    • Pre cut the bread cubes, store in a zip top bag
    • If you want to add veggies these can be precooked also up to 3 days before serving
    • The day/night before is the time to assemble the “dry ingredients”
  • In an oiled 9” X 13” X 2” baking dish, spread out the bread cubes
  • Top the bread cubes with the meats and optional vegetables
  • Sprinkle the top with shredded cheese
  • Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator
  • The day/night before you can also mix the wet ingredients and hold them separately covered in the refrigerator.
  • At least 30 minutes before you want to bake the Strata, take your prepared ingredients out of the refrigerator, and let them warm up in the house a little. Also preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  • Move to step # 4 and complete the final steps!
  • Non-dairy tips: It is perfectly fine to substitute your favorite non-dairy items for these dairy items listed. Please be sure the milk is not sweetened. And if you want you could omit the cheese!
  • Egg substitutions? We have not tried that, so at this time we do not suggest it. However, if you are a pro at egg substitutions and baking, be brave, try ¼ of a recipe! And always let us know how it turns out….even if it does not. It is always good to try new things.
  • Additional ingredients: Look for leftovers in your refrigerator, any sauteed mushrooms, onion, steamed carrots, spinach you need to use up? Just keep in mind the overall flavor is breakfast-y, and how deep your pan is!

The Method

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and grease your 9” X 13” X 2” baking dish.

Step 2

Layer the dry ingredients: Bread first, meats, additional items if using, then cheese if you want to use that.

Step 3
Put the 6 eggs in a bowl and lightly whisk them together, add the 1 ½ cups of milk, the 2 ½ tsp of Dijon Mustard, the 1 TBSP of Worcestershire and the Acme seasoning. Whisk again to bring it all together.

Step 4
Pour the liquid over the dry ingredients in the baking dish. Place in the oven uncovered for 40 to 45 minutes.

Step 5
You will know it is done because the top is mostly golden brown, there will be some bubbling on the sides, and it smells delicious!

Step 6
Serve this warm, with fresh fruit, and enjoy!
